The Network and IoT Security course is a practice-oriented program that introduces fundamental cybersecurity concepts through real-world network configuration and experimentation. Using OpenWrt as a flexible open-source platform, participants gain hands-on experience in securing network infrastructures, configuring firewalls, managing routing and network address translation (NAT), deploying virtual private networks (VPNs) and monitoring network traffic. The course also explores security challenges specific to IoT and embedded systems, focusing on secure configuration, access control, system hardening and threat mitigation. Through guided laboratories and realistic scenarios, learners develop the ability to design, implement, manage and troubleshoot secure network environments. The course bridges cybersecurity theory and practical application, preparing participants for roles involving network administration, cybersecurity operations and secure system deployment.

Learning Objectives

Explain core cybersecurity concepts, including the CIA triad and common network and IoT threats.
Design and configure secure network architectures at the network edge.
Implement and manage firewall rules, routing and Network Address Translation (NAT).
Deploy and configure VPN solutions to enable secure communications.
Apply security best practices to IoT and embedded devices.
Install, configure and administer OpenWrt-based systems.
Monitor and analyze network traffic using appropriate tools and techniques.
Troubleshoot network connectivity and security-related issues effectively.
Use Linux command-line tools for system administration and security management.
Apply ethical cybersecurity practices and communicate security findings clearly.

Prerequisites

Prior exposure to network devices such as routers and network gateways.
General IT literacy, including software installation, system configuration and basic command-line usage.
Fundamental cybersecurity awareness, including knowledge of common threats, authentication mechanisms and secure communication concepts.
Basic understanding of computer networks and internet connectivity principles.
